DMI is a public funded agency founded in 1872 and residing under the Ministry of Climate and Energy. There are presently employed around 400 persons.
DMI is servicing the Danish public society with weather forecasts, wave, flood, ice and nuclear prediction/alerts; forecasting weather for the air traffic and airports; servicing the Danish Defence and conduct scientific research. DMI is a member and contributor to the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Meteorological models and global climate data from this joint institution is validated as the best and most precise produced in the world. DMI in general has global awareness, but the primary focus is on the North Atlantic, North Sea, and Baltic region and selected locations of interest i.e. Greenland, the Red Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Yellow Sea. In addition DMI support the Danish Armed Forces in their areas of operation world wide.
DMI is running its own Super Computer with in-house developed and produced high-resolution meteorological models (Hirlam) for these areas using data from the European collaboration as input. The scientific departments of DMI are constantly monitoring, validating the data and developing new models integrating new research and knowledge. The resulting high-resolution prognoses are thus validated and second to none.
DMI Maritime Service was founded in 1971 initially with the purpose of providing the merchant fleet with weatherrouteing on voyages across the North Atlantic. This service rapidly became global, and DMI Maritime Service is on a daily basis tracking and servicing approximately 300 ships ensuring their safe passage by planning routes around adverse weather conditions and thus saving fuel, CO2-reducing cost per voyage and monitor fleet performance for either ship-owner or charterers. DMI Maritime Service is furthermore servicing the offshore industry and wind farms providing reliable, accurate wind and wave prognoses to oilrigs and wind power farms in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the Irish Sea.
All forecasters employed in DMI Maritime Service are experienced meteorologists with minimum 4 years seniority as duty forecasters in other divisions of DMI Forecasting Services Department. Furthermore two experienced Captains manage the Fleet Performance and contribute to the overall operation with their knowledge and experience from the sea.
